Imagine New York City. What do you see?
You’re probably thinking of either skyscrapers, Broadway, Times Square, and Central Park. Maybe you even thought of all four!
However, there’s one thing that you’re missing in that image. The one thing you would never think of when New York City pops into your head. And that’s golf courses.
Yes, you heard me right! New York City is filled to the brim with fantastic golf courses, even though you would never think of there being room in the Big Apple for them. You have plenty of options out there to get a good game of golf in, without spending too much time traveling to the course.
So, whether or not you’re on a business trip and trying to close a deal or just wanting to get a break from the kids at home, here are the top five golf courses in and around the New York City area.
1. Bethpage Black
Located in Long Island, Bethpage Black is the golf course for you if you’re looking for a difficult course that’s been used by the pros. This course has been the two-time host of U.S. Open, one-time host of the Barclays, and the two-time host of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Talk about a famous course!
You won’t be disappointed here because it’s definitely one of the top golf courses in the entire world. However, if you choose to conquer this beast, be aware that you’ll be walking a ton, as they do not allow golf carts on the course. So, unfortunately, your custom golf carts will have to stay at home on this one.
2. Neshanic Valley Golf Course
Taking about an hour to get to from Midtown, Neshanic Valley Golf Course should be your choice if you’re looking for a good change of pace from the city. This course is smack dab in the middle of New Jersey farmland and will is perfect to enjoy nature, while playing your favourite sport.
Keep in mind though that it’s quite difficult to get a spot here, so plan well in advance for this one!
3. Bethpage Red
Don’t think that Bethpage Black is all there is. Oh no, Bethpage Red is another great course that you should consider. Granted, it doesn’t have all of the awards and recognition of Bethpage Black, but don’t discount it because of that!
We can’t all be famous, after all.
The two biggest pros to this course over its brother is that 1) it’s incredibly easier to master and 2) you can actually ride your golf carts, which is super important to many of us.
4. Pound Ridge
Located on 172 acres of land in Pound Ridge, New York, this is the golf course for you if you love a good challenge. This course is designed to be incredibly difficult, on purpose. The famous designer, Pete Dye, created the course to seem smaller than it actually is, tricking golfers into overshooting or undershooting.
Who doesn’t like a good challenge?
If you’re looking to be transported back to Celtic Ireland, you’ve got 250 acres here to do it. Ballyowen is absolutely picturesque and you may even get distracted from your game by the fantastic views. This should be your pick if you’re looking for a good mix between moderate challenges and a pristine environment.
And the clubhouse will actually take your breath away!
So, which will it be? The most challenging course of your life at Bethpage Black or the less well-known, but just as beautiful, Neshanic Valley Golf Course? You’ve got your choices in front of you, but no matter which you choose, you will definitely not be disappointed.
