Nobody expected “The Fifth Estate,” the movie about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, to bomb so badly at the box office–except perhaps Mr. Assange himself. The film only sold $1,673,351 million worth of tickets over the weekend, according to Walt Disney, which released the movie. It’s the worst opening weekend for a movie in wide release (more than 1,500 theaters) this year. On Twitter, several folks claimed they watched it in an otherwise empty theater.
Dave Hollis, Executive Vice President of Theatrical Distribution for Walt Disney Studios, said “We’re disappointed with the result.”
