Social media contacts – who owns them?
Share

Social Media Week 2012 SP

I got this article today in my mailbox and thought it raised a great question for the social media marketing workers out in the world. Social Media contacts- who actually owns them?

Do you “own” the contacts that you have either in your personal social media accounts, or in your business social media accounts? Do other companies have the “right” to send mass emails to contacts in your business LinkedIn group? Do you have the right to contact these people after you leave a business?

I guess we wait for the courts to decide, according to this article. Most companies should have a very detailed set up of how social media can be handled within the company, but this leads us back to can they really enforce it considering they don’t “own” the contacts.

Very interesting to see how this develops over the coming years.
