10 Ways Relationship Marketing Can Explode Your Business

Written by : Tom George| 0 | Content Curation

I’m getting ready to tune a few brands out on Facebook. I’m tired of all the so called “Experts”. I plan on using my Twitter lists more as well, and if you’re not on one of them, I really don’t care to follow you much in my Twitter stream either.

It’s not to say that I’m disconnecting or going into my shell. It’s simply that I have a great life, and as all of us should, I try to keep it balanced to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I felt things were a little out of balance, so I simply had to re-evaluate the big picture. Technology should assist us, and make things easier, not complicate our lives and make them become totally unmanageable.

Hence, I am seeing a growing trend on the information super highway. The trend is how should I put it? The trend is “It’s my super cyber highway” or no way. Now there is hope, and I am here to tell you that, if you are feeling the cyber burn, as I was, not to worry. The remedy is quick. Here are 10 ways to explode your business with relationship marketing and relieve some of  the pain.

1. Be Transparent, Be your real self.

How can someone form a relationship with you if they don’t know the real you. It is about building a repoire and establishing trust. It is not some secret sect or a place to vent your frustrations anonymously. So take some time to put the real you online, your real photo, and list some of your real hobbies. Once you do this be sure to get some conversations started. The key is to balance your feelings while being respectful of other peoples point of view. This will let people learn who you really are, which is an important first step in relationship marketing.

2. Give a compliment, but be sure it’s a sincere one

Everyone loves to get a great compliment. Simply by giving someone a sincere compliment, you can certainly get some fantastic dialogue going. If you become known as being honest and sincere, your recommendations and compliment’s will go a long way. With this you have to understand what type of compliment’s to give. Here is an example. I have been reading a lot of content online lately, and when I find a really great piece, I often let the author know via Twitter. This is a recent example of one such instance, and we have been talking on Twitter all week.

3. Show a little gratitude.

Showing someone else that you appreciate the things that they do for you is paramount. No one likes to be taken for granted. It really doesn’t matter how small the gesture is, do your best to always somehow acknowledge the nice things that people do for you. It can be as simple as just saying thank you.

4. Be Upfront Always Let Someone Know Your Intentions.

Try to resist the urge to be clever or achieve some ends by being to crafty. People are busy and they will appreciate you being candid and letting them know what your intentions are. For example if you are looking to build a community online as I am, let people know that upfront. Once people know who you are, what kind of a person you are, and what you are after, it becomes easier for them to learn to trust you, and who knows they just might join your endeavor because of it.

5. Be Funny Witty and Charming

Don’t take everything to seriously all the time. Humor and brevity are fantastic ways to show your lighter side and to let someone get closer to you. After all, no one really likes a stick in the mud. Now remember there is a time and place for everything, but if you give someone a good laugh and make them smile from time to time, it certainly doesn’t hurt anything. On the other hand if you are always to serious it can have a negative effect on your relationships.

6. Be Helpful

This may sound like stating the obvious, but you would be surprised. In relationship marketing and in building relationships in general, it is important to offer assistance and be helpful. Sometimes it is harder than you might think. If you however, always go out of your way to put others first, provide a high level of integrity and value, and keep a cool level head, you will develop some very meaningful relationships, great advocates and will garner some well deserved respect and recognition.

7. Be Optimistic and Positive

If you ask some of the best entrepreneurs, who have achieved some of the greatest business success stories of all time, a few questions about how they were able to achieve such success. Without a doubt you will here about the importance of a positive mental attitude. You have to exude confidence, “not arrogance”, but confidence and do your best to maintain a positive upbeat attitude at all times. Do not let your emotions get the best of you. In this instance, if you do not have anything nice or positive to say, don’t say anything at all.

8. Participate in the Conversation

Now let’s be honest, how often do you feel like the online conversation has taken a turn for the absurd. I mean it happens quite often. However you must roll with it and not try to steer people in a different direction then they wish to go in. To do this you must participate in the conversation. This means even if it is not your most favorite topic, you must still be engaging and let people know that if it is important to them, it is important to you.

9. Stop Thinking in Terms of Social Media Marketing

I don’t really know how this got coined social media marketing, but I think it is a terrible name. Really there is nothing much social about it. Now if you are a celebrity or a big company, I can understand how you might be doing a little social media marketing, but for the rest of us, no it is relationship marketing. I will tell you why. You are building dialogue and trust with new friends and with people that are online that you have not always done so with in the real world. The dynamics of sociology apply, just in a different way.

10. Diversify

Facebook is a great tool to use to meet new people and stay connected to friends and family. Twitter is a fantastic way to send messages and post quick updates, and there are a few other really popular services, but there are even more then you might be aware of. Check out some new ones and diversify. Reinvent your social media from time to time. If you are always hanging out with the same sites, try a few new ones. In relationship marketing it is all about networking and making your contacts come to know that you are someone that they can depend on.

Great article — thank you, Tom! It really is so easy to get wrapped up in the “publishing” side of social media that we forget about the “engaging” side — myself included! I just read some statistics on how little Black Friday business came from Facebook and Twitter this year, and I really believe it’s because people are tuning out those social media marketing messages.
Thanks again — I look forward to your next article!
