Ask yourself: What do I consider a useful reward? Airline miles? Cash? Game tickets? Clothing discounts?

“If you use a card as a convenience method of payment, it makes sense to consider rewards,” said Ben Woolsey, director of marketing and research at CreditCards.com, a Bankrate.com division.

“If you are borrowing money, you’re probably paying interest rates that could offset the value of the rewards,” he said
