Marotti Campi: Le Marche Wine Ambassador in Canada
Share

Marotti Campi One of my favourite areas in the world is the Adriatic coastal region of Marche in east central Italy. It is serene and beautiful with rolling hills and pastures, numerous hilltop towns, outstanding food (particularly seafood) and some of the best wine values in the world.

As with most central and southern Italian regions, wines here were historically produced in bulk and shipped out to northern Italy and beyond. But over the past several decades, the focus turned to improving viticulture techniques and growing indigenous grape varietals, of which the white grape varietal Verdicchio is the most important.

Traditionally, Verdicchio was a mass produced, mass-marketed wine of relatively poor quality, but that has changed dramatically with wineries and grape growers focusing more on quality. As a result, many outstanding wines have emerged from the region. Verdicchio is a versatile grape that can exhibit many different expressions from young and fresh to complex and concentrated. In general, the grape tends to possess characteristics of apple flavours, a mineral quality, fresh acidity and a very typical finish of almonds.

The Marotti Campi vineyards have been in the family for over a century. Located only 10 km from the Adriatic coast, the cool maritime breezes that blow into the vineyards contribute to vibrant wines of concentration and a beautiful freshnessio ‘Albiano’ 2011 Marche, Italy…
