Scheduling Note: We’ve started our “summer hours” schedule here at the Resonance blog. For the next couple of months, we’ll be posting twice a week: a “reg’lar” post each Tuesday and our usual Twitter Roundup each Friday. Happy Summer!

Newsjacking for fun and profitIf you’ve been keeping up with recent trends in social media, the term “newsjacking” may have caught your eye. If you’re looking to attract attention for your message—and, let’s face it, who isn’t?—it’s something you need to know about.

Now, even as I write this, I can hear foreheads being smacked, accompanied by a chorus of “Yet another social media trick I gotta learn …” Fear not. Newsjacking is a pretty simple concept, one that PR pros have been rocking for years.

Basically, it involves latching on to a trending news items and riding its popularity wave to gain attention for your content.

Still sound too complicated? Let me break it down to four simple steps:

  1. Identify a hot news story.
  2. Find a connection between said news story and your content strategy.
  3. Turn the connection into a blog post, article, Facebook post, e-newsletter article, or other content piece.
  4. Sit back and enjoy the attention (and the traffic to your website).

Believe me, it’s not as tricky—or as ominous—as it may sound.

True-life example: A little over a year ago, The Book of Mormon was generating a huge amount of buzz as it led the Tony Awards field with 14 nominations. I did a little experiment to see if I could get a little piece of that buzz, and the resulting blog post, “What ‘The Book of Mormon’ Has to Teach Us About Social Media for Business,” turned out to be one of my most popular posts ever.

Get the picture? OK, campers—your turn to give it a try, then report back here with your results!
