Today we’re taking another break from our regular fare of practical social media advice to look at the big picture of the massive socialverse.
These are some challenging days for Facebook, the network that made social media … well, social media. The recent headlines speak for themselves:
It’s not a new subject for us here at the Resonance blog: just last month we posed the question “Will LinkedIn Outlast Facebook?”
We said it before, and we’ll say it again: Facebook isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. That said, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start thinking about what a post-Facebook social media universe might look like … and how we can be ready for it.
So if Facebook does indeed fall out of favor, what will replace it? Twitter? Too limited. LinkedIn? Too business-focused (and that’s a good thing).
Nope, the only network capable of meeting the needs of Facebook expats is Google+.
It’s been nearly a year since Google’s do-or-die foray into the socialverse launched, and the last 12 months have seen it both hailed as a superior product and derided as a “ghost town.”
It’s never been a secret that Google+ is in many ways superior to Facebook. (In fact, many of its features have sparked a competitive vibe in the social giant next door.) The only thing that prevents me from using it more often is the relative lack of activity among my immediate peers … but that could be changing.
In fact, just yesterday, Inc. Magazine published a piece on why Google+ may actually be a better place for business than either Facebook or Twitter.
So if you haven’t yet set up camp over at Google+, now is a good time to get started. It’s duck-soup-easy to set up both a personal profile and a company page (no massive cover photo required). Then take it for a quick test drive (the tutorials are actually helpful), then start “circling” (the equivalent of “friending” or “following”) people and organizations.
