Members of Iraq’s government were infuriated by the United States continuing to fly unmanned surveillance drones to protect State Department assets such as the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and American personnel in the country, The New York Times reported Monday. The State Department’s Iraq fleet consists of about two dozen of the unarmed drones, which are smaller than the military’s drones that carry weapons, the Times reported. Many of the Iraq drones are used for spare parts, officials told the Times. The drone program was revealed in a State Department report and information provided to prospective companies wanting to bid on the government contract. Still, advisers to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and a member of his Cabinet said the U.S. didn’t consult with them about the program, which began on a trial basis last year and continued after American troops pulled out of the country, the Times reported.
