Just as an entire film can sometimes be encapsulated within its opening sequence, so too can a perfectly-calibrated ending leave the viewer with a sense of having just had a profound aesthetic experience. Twist endings are fine and good, but they can be misused as mere shock tactics to gussy up a wanting narrative or to cheaply fool the audience. Instead, the best film endings seem to become inevitable in retrospect, satisfyingly summing up the themes, style, and narrative of the previous two hours.
