5 Things You’re Not Doing on Facebook (and Should Be)

Yes, the world’s most popular online hangout loves to shake things up on a regular basis, and the downside is that it’s easy to forget about some potentially useful capabilities as the shiny objects pile up.

That said, here are a few Facebook Page tricks that might have wandered out of your repertoire … and that you might want to bring back into the fold in 2012.

1. Check your Hidden Posts

Did you know that your Facebook Wall has a spam filter? Your Hidden Posts page (the link is just below the Wall link under your profile pic) acts like the spam folder in your email … and just like the spam folder, it can occasionally trap legitimate communications.

If you check your Hidden Posts regularly, you’re less likely to miss any bona fide communications that somehow get marked as spam—and any buisness opportunities that may be connected with them.

2. Broaden your image horizons

A recent study by Roost shows that images generate 50 percent more impressions than any other type of content. Most people think of Facebook images as photos, but pretty pictures are just one of your options: think charts, screenshots, diagrams, infographics, or even text pasted into a Photoshop file and saved as a JPG. 3. Check out the new Insights

Recently Facebook updated its Insights analytics to better deliver what Page owners need to see how they’re doing. Among the new additions are:

  • Friends of Fans: The number of people who are Facebook Friends of people who have liked your page.
  • People Talking About This: The number of people who have interacted with your page or its content.
  • Weekly Total Reach: The number of people who have seen any content associated with your page.

If you haven’t yet explored the new Insights, this is the perfect time to do it so you can ramp up your monthly page reviews in 2012.

4. Use Facebook Questions

When Facebook Questions launched earlier this year, they were all over the place. These days, not so much … but they’re still a useful tool for engaging your audience and pulling valuable customer information.

A Facebook Question takes just seconds to set up, and it can yield the kind of research data that companies used to pay big bucks for … or the kind of brain-trust advice that you can’t put a price tag on.

5. Create posts designed for interaction

Some of the most popular Facebook posts out there are the ones that ask fans for their feedback. That could take the form of a trivia question, a fill-in-the-blank statement, a simple open-ended question, or a “Like this post if you …” request.
