5 Things You Must Do on Social Media Before the End of the Year

2012 is right around the corner -- is your social media strategy ready?Now that Thanksgiving 2011 has come and gone, we can officially say we’re in the closing weeks of 2011 … which means that, ready or not, it’s time to start thinking about 2012.

Depending on your industry, the next few weeks will either see you slaving away at a breakneck pace or wondering how you’ll pass the time. Either way, it pays to set aside some time for getting your social assets in place so you’ll be ready to rock and roll on January 1.

So as you put together your year-end social media checklist, make sure the following 5 activities are right there at the top.

1. Make sure your outposts are in place on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ (yes, Google+).

Thousands of businesses entered the social space in 2011, and a few of your competitors were probably among them. So if your social portfolio is missing any of the four networks listed above, get those outposts set up now. Doesn’t need to be anything fancy (you can always dress them up later), but at least get your business out there and get your basic information in place.

2. Update your LinkedIn profile and company page.

LinkedIn is growing in stature as a must-have business asset, and having outdated information on your profile or page is the equivalent of handing someone a 5-year-old brochure. Set aside some time to dust off both your personal profile and your company page, and don’t forget to ask for those all-important recommendations.

3. Learn to use Google+.

Yes, folks, I know you’ve been putting it off, but it’s time to bite the bullet and get used to using Google+. We’re still not sure where the socialverse’s newest network will fit in over the long-term, but it’s probably not going away anytime soon. So get that business page set up now, take it for a few test drives, and start integrating it into your overall social strategy. 4. Brainstorm 5 ideas for YouTube videos and set up a plan for creating them.

2011 was a huge year for online video, and that trend shows all signs of continuing into 2012. Spend some quality time coming up with at least 5 ideas that you could turn into online videos for your business. If you need to prime the creativity pump, start by looking at some of your old blog posts, your website FAQs, and questions on Twitter or Quora that are related to your industry. 5. Set your blog goals for 2012

Take a long, contemplative look at your blog and its analytics, and decide what it is you want  to see this time next year. Do you want more comments? Better search results? More social sharing? Each goal involves a distinct strategy, so decide on yours and get your game plan in place for 2012.
