We’ve reached the end of the audition rounds, and thus far ‘The X Factor’ has been something of a dud. The problems are many, but there are three main issues that kept the show from being the compelling mega-hit Fox was hoping it would be. First, act-long auditions. The way they set up auditions on this show – like a complete coming out party complete with audience adulation, a three-minute sob story, and enough soaring music to make an Olympics package blush – absolutely undermined the undiscovered talent idea of the show. Each audition felt like a performance, and the hopefuls established stars who were just looking for their place on the show. Second, boring show personalities. Steve Jones is of course leading the lack-of-personality parade, but the non-Simon judges are just as vapid. LA Reid seems to do nothing other than air conduct a capella auditions of pop songs, while Nicole Scherzinger hasn’t done anything other than attempt to form a perfect circle with her mouth. Paula, meanwhile, is Paula, and that’s not too good.
