President Obama and his family are summering on Martha’s Vineyard this week, and though he’s not the first president to vacation there, he may be the first president to golf there during an earthquake.
The island, which boasts a year-round population of over 10,000, is accessible only by plane, ferry or private boat. It gained its current prominence in the 19th century, thanks in large part to its popularity among whalers and convalescents.
The movie Jaws was filmed in Edgartown, where Steven Spielberg made full use of the residents working as extras. (Incidentally, there have already been over twenty shark sightings off the coast of The Vineyard this summer.)
