When a winery says, “Hey, this is our benchmark” wine enthusiasts should consider that an invitation to either get onboard or completely reject the winery from the mental wine rolodex. An entrée into decision-making doesn’t get much easier than a winery holding up their Pinot Noir as a, “Stylistic ideal” as Red Car has done with the ‘09s. Fortunately, in my opinion, Red Car Wine Company, is meritorious of a permanent spot in the mental rolodex for their line-up of wines, particularly their “Trolley” series, a notch up from their accessibly priced “Box Car” series, but below their reserves. At $45, the “Trolley” Pinot Noir isn’t inexpensive, but it’s honest and authentic and that alone justifies the price in an era of blowsy, over-extracted California Pinot that can sometimes mimic either Syrah or spiked fruit punch Kool-Aid.
