An experimental project produced a full-blown novel in one day, via 23 hardworking authors collaborating on the Web. On May 28, 2011, I took part in the 24-Hour Novel Project. Organized by new media impresario John Herman, the project teamed up 23 writers to co-author a complete novel online within 24 hours. The project included a 24th member as well: Stephen Bobbett, an illustrator and visual designer, was brought aboard to illustrate the cover art for the novel, within the same 24-hour time span. Several days before the project date, Herman had the participants submit brief ideas for characters, settings, genres, and themes via a Web form asking targeted questions. Herman then picked a few of these ideas, combined them into an outline, and released the outline at 12:00 am EDT on May 28 to the rest of us participants on Google Docs. That’s when the 24-hour clock started ticking. Each author was assigned a specific chapter (I wrote Chapter 18), and all 23 authors shared editing responsibilities for continuity. We used Google Docs throughout the day to write the novel. We also used social media — mostly Twitter (using the hashtag #24HrNovel) — to comment on (and sometimes bemoan) our progress, share relevant information, and actively collaborate with each other about ideas and continuity.
