Twitter Surpasses 145 Million Registered Users And Has A Site Restructure Redesign Coming
On September 3rd Twitter reached an all time high of 145 million registered users and is showing no signs of slowing down as it continues to gain more popularity, this recent announcement by co-founder Evan Williams proves just how awesome Twitter is doing: they have surpassed the 145 million registered users milestone and more people are using mobile devices to log on the famous microblogging service.
The announcement was made by Williams in a post published on the Twitter blog yesterday. He also added that about 300,000 third party applications have been developed around the Twitter api, allowing users to send even more 140 character messages to the community.
“These new services help people get the most out of Twitter, contributing to user growth and new business opportunities — both of which are critical to the long-term viability of the ecosystem,” Williams said.
Also if you are one of these registered users and love to use Twitter and you are on Twitter all the time, a new and improved Twitter.com is just right for you! Third party apps like TweetDeck will probably see less usage as Twitter.com revamps it’s site and offers users a lot more! The new Twitter will start showing up next Tuesday.
According to SFGate, there are several big changes to the format of Twitter. First, Twitter has trashed it’s single panel interface and replaced it with a two-panel interface. The new Twitter will be more user friendly. The left side of the panel will show your tweet stream as well as your actions including @mentions, retweets, lists, etc.
On the right side, the panel will display your followers, who you’re following, favorite tweets, lists, trends and suggestions of who to follow! It’s safe to say the new Twitter is sounding very similar to Tweetdeck, Seemic or even Hootsuite.
Another very useful feature to the new Twitter is the ability to embed media. On the old Twitter, the user is taken to an external site to embed media. On the New Twitter, once TwitPic is clicked, you’ll see the image on the right side of the page and you never leave Twitter! This is going to be fantastic to be able to view the image in the same browser.
You can also embed video. Let’s say if you clicked on a tweet containing a link to a YouTube Video, you’ll be able to see the video on the right side of the page! That’s great! Less browsers opening up and bogging down the computer!
You see that old “more” button down at the bottom of your Twitter page? Say your goodbyes now because it will be gone. The new Twitter will have a scrolling function that allows you to scroll down to view the tweet log. Wonderful! It’s safe to say many people hate the “more” button!
